Impeccable beauty… the challenge

There’s something to be said about women’s magazines in Japan: how are the women so beautiful?

Even though they may look entirely different a la naturale, the women featured in these magazines are elegant and simply gorgeous. Their makeup isn’t overdone and they don’t look like the sexed-up glamazons seen in western magazines.

Every outfit is coordinated down to the simple bangle on the wrist, the thinnest belt adding contrast to a skirt. It’s hard to think they can manage having jobs, a social life AND find time to coordinate their outfits to the minutest details.

I suppose, if given the choice between time and precise coordination, I’d choose the former and devote it to my hobbies. Yet perhaps beauty is a hobby in itself for many women. Apparently, so is spending unfathomable amounts on new clothes, makeup and accessories.

At the end of the day, I still admire these women. They are beautiful. Their hair is perfect. Their makeup and skin flawless. They glow with a certain happiness that evades the unnaturally skinny, pale creatures in western spreads. (Not to say that most Japanese women aren’t thin and small framed – they are.)

So here’s to trying to capture even a bit of that radiance in daily life. I can’t say I’ll devote most of my time to looking beautiful every day, but even just a little bit doesn’t hurt. After all, when you think you look beautiful on the outside, you usually feel good inside, too. And when you’re good on the inside, that’ll show in everything you do.
